Meet theBoard
In this newsletter we are featuring Douglas Tucker, who has selflessly volunteered his time and efforts for the last 23 years to the Exploits Community Employment Corporation. In fact, he is one of the original founding members of the ECEC which began in 1986

Doug was born in St. John’s, NL and grew up between there and a small community nearby called Port Elizabeth. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Memorial University, with a Major in Social Work, in 1970. In 1986 Doug was working with the Canada Employment and Immigration Commission, which later became Service Canada. As an employment counsellor for persons with special needs Doug developed a vast portfolio of knowledge and experience, which has proven to be a great asset to our Corporation. He has been, and continues to be, an avid advocate for the more challenged sector of our society. As Chair of the ECEC his tireless efforts help ensure that we continue to provide Supported Employment services to persons with developmental disabilities. We are proud to salute our Chair, Douglas Tucker.

Come See Us Today!

Here at the ECEC we assist persons with developmental disabilities in finding meaningful employment. This has a varied range depending on each individuals needs.

When an individual enters our office we are there for whatever employment support they require, whether it is resume writing, interview skills or labour market research. We always encourage our clients to take part in as much of the process as possible so that they can learn or further improve their skills.  We encourage self motivation and push our clients to reach their maximum potential.

If you or someone you know has a developmental disability and would be interested in acquiring either full-time or part-time employment please contact The Exploits Community Employment Corporation at (709) 489-5643 to schedule an appointment.

Student Summer Programs

The summer of 2009 marked another successful time for student employment here at The Corporation. We have worked hard to give students with developmental disabilities work experience and to help prepare these individuals for the employment road that lies ahead, after they leave the education system. This summer; along with grants such as Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) and Provincial Level l, ll ,ll; the ECEC have ensured the successful completion of 3 full-time student positions and 1 part-time, along with the employment of 3 job coaches. For most of these students this is their first taste of the work force, which as anybody can attest to, can be very daunting. However, our students have succeeded and will hopefully continue to flourish as they continue to build their employable skills and resumes.

For more information on summer programs for 2010 please contact us at (709) 489-5643.

In silently falling silvery snow,

Under a magical mistletoe.

In boxes tied up with laces,

Stockings hanging on fireplaces.

Atop the tree where a li’l star shines,

In bells that greet us

with their chimes.

In tunes of carols,

in the laughter of children,

May you find your Christmas

& Joys of the Season!

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!!

Christmas gift suggestions:

To your enemy, forgiveness.

To an opponent, tolerance.

To a friend, your heart.

To a customer, service

To all, charity.

To every child, a good example.

To yourself, respect

Paul Butler

is a 27 year old man who was born and currently still lives in Botwood.  Paul is working part-time at the local Foodland under the Supported Employment Program and has been successfully employed for the past 11 years.  He works independently with a little assistance from the other staff at the store.  While at work he is responsible for the produce section; packing, displays, etc.

Paul’s family have always been very supportive of Paul and his employment, especially his parents Harold and Dorothy.  His Dad feels that “without the Supported Employment Program Paul would be lost, he really looks forward to work.”  Both his parents believe this program is “excellent” and feel that one of the most important parts of Paul’s employment is the social aspect.  Paul gets along well with everybody at work and he attends all the social events that are held within Foodland.

When Paul is not working he enjoys hockey, he is a huge fan of the Ottawa Senators, which is evident when you see his apartment.  He also enjoys being around people and travelling.

Here at the ECEC we are so proud of Paul and his accomplishments.

Matt is 31 years of age and resides in Grand Falls-Windsor and has been an employee of Sobeys since 1999.  Matt was recently presented with his 10 year service pin by Sobey’s Manager, Bill Gillingham, at their monthly Employee Engagement.

Matt’s grandmother says that Matt has come a long way over the past 10 years.  She says  “he has learned a lot, he loves his job, and looks forward to going to work.”  Matt works Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30 to 6:30 and she says that he is ready at least an hour before its time to go and waiting eagerly outside for his support worker to pick him up.  He began his job as a very shy young man, with a couple of simple duties to complete with his Job Coach.  Matt informed me that he enjoys working with his new job coach and tells me, secretly, that “he’s a hard case” as he laughs.  Matt is responsible for stocking shelves and as no problem showing customers where to find items.  So he has certainly come a long way from that very shy young man.  Matt seems to be liked by all staff, and they appear to be very supportive of Matt and are always available to help him out in any way.

Keep up the great work, Matt!!!
